Welcome:

Jerry Cook took over as Chairman of CTiB, with Michael Atwill as Vice-Chairman, and Barbara Vond as Secretary.

Minutes of the last meeting were distributed and signed as a true record of the meeting with one alteration, 8.d Revd. Tim Deacon volunteered to help Sue Watkins organize monthly visits to Three Corners Cross Parks Bascombe Court.

Matters arising:

4a. Christmas ˜ Put Christ back into Christmas stickers were largely used up after two years of use and could more ordered for this year. Michael Atwill agreed to organize this with the consensus that the same amount would be ordered as previously, but this time with the slogan changed to ˜Keep Christ in Christmas".

Correspondence:

Babs Rubensaat read out several items of interest CTiB had recently received including a Newsletter from Churches in Devon , with a copy to be circulated to each Church for 2009. Barbara Vond will now be dealing with CTiB Correspondence.

Treasures Report:

Eileen Hulme expressed the need to consider further how the £875.04 in the bank at present could be made use of in 2009. Whilst money would be needed for outgoings such as the Lent Course, insurance, books and the further creation of Christmas stickers, there would be more money coming in from subscriptions around Easter time. These should be in before Easter and so could further donations be made to community organizations such as the St Mary's Bell Ringers who played at the School and Town Carol Concert? Could money be given to support the work of Youth Worker Jonathan Olivero?

Phil Marsden asked instead of small donations to groups could the extra money be used to develop evangelistic outreach by the CTiB e.g. Throw a party for the town? Barbara Vond said the Pentecost Party two years ago had tried this approach at the Rugby Club but was not well attended, but this might have been due to publicity or location? Phil also asked could we higher the Brixham Theatre, have a guest entertainer and bring non Christians along? It was felt that such possible developments, with funds available, should be discussed at the next meeting. It was also proposed by Helen Barratt that a donation of £50 would be made to St Mary's Bell Ringers in thanks for their support at the Carol Concert in 2008, seconded by Ruth Allen and passed unanimously.

The need to change mandate for the present CTiB banking system was also raised. With a new Chairman, Vice -Chair and Secretary, Barbara agreed to initiate this and it was proposed any 2 from 4 would be able to sign, Revd.Ian Blyde seconded this and it was unanimously passed.

Future Event:

a.  Lent Studies:

Revd. Anne Burden explained that following the success of last year, this years course would be structured into 10 groups with two leaders from different church backgrounds (one more leader to be arranged), in a variety of venues. The Lent Course was again this year produced by the Diosies of Exeter with DVD and resources created in partnership with Roman Catholic, Baptist and Methodist Churches. A small donation from each person wishing to participate would help cover costs and booking places essential. Leaders would be receiving information soon.

Holy Week:

The Walk of Witness will be on Good Friday April 10th. A sunrise survive was also proposed again on Berry Head for Easter Sunday, for which Revd. Phil Marsden will sort out the details.

b.  Pentecost:

It was noted that last years was a very effective witness and to allow time to prepare an event.

For this year it was suggested that this be moved to the next meeting for further discussion.

c. A Coffee morning for CTiB this year was proposed by Eileen Hulme and she thanked every church for providing the support necessary for last years mornings.

AOB:

1. Christian Aid Week:

This years date of Brixham Christian Aid week Sat May 9th to Sat May 16th (actual week: 10th -17th May) as the week in Brixham begins with the Lent Lunches on Saturday 10th and finishes with the lunch on the 16th . The United Service usually takes place on the Sunday, this year 10th May. Revd. Jerry Cook pointed out that the Methodist Church was already committed to another event that evening and the Revd. Anne Burden also said the Anglican churches would be participating in celebrations involving the Bishop of Exeter. Revd. Jerry Cook said that he would like to host the Christian Aid Service at the Methodist Church when those going out collecting would be commissioned, so proposed instead that the service be held on the Sunday 3rd May. Mary Fallon said that the speaker would be provided and agreed this would be a possible solution to allow all churches in Brixham to still come and support the Christian Aid service.

2.  Shekinah Project:

Michael Atwill explained that the old Project 58 in Torquay now the ˜Shekinah Project was a Christian project supporting the homeless in the Torbay. Providing hot meals and some health care services, he suggested that Christians in Brixham could support their work by donating food and specific items. These are listed on a leaflet to be given out to all the churches. Brixham United Reformed Church will provide a central collection point for the charity and take any donations there to conserve fuel. Times the URC church will be open to leave donations are: Tue 10am-12.30pm, Thurs 2pm-4pm and Sun 11.30am - 12.30pm.

3. Sing Christmas:

Revd.Jerry Cook expressed his enjoyment of the Sing Christmas event 2008 at the Berry Head Hotel. Listening to a Radio Devon broadcast listeners all over Devon were able to join together and participate in the service. Jerry hoped that it would be developed into a bigger event next year.

4. An evening with Jimmy Cricket :

This event offers the potential of a night out for Christians wanting to bring friends to an evening of entertainment at the Palace Theatre Paignton on Thu 14th May at 7.30pm , with Jimmy afterwards being interviewed about his Christian faith.

5. Missionary Support:

At the AGM in 2008 it was agreed that CTiB would continue to support a charity but now on a yearly basis. This issue was again raised as the year was up for Christian Aid. It was proposed that a new charity, as yet to be decided would be selected. Karl Rubensaat supported this motion, seconded by Len Lucas. The vote taken was; 8 for, 7 against and 11 abstentions.

The motion was passed with the understanding that the Christian Aid week would run as in the past organised by Mary and her team with the Lent Lunches and Christian Aid Service to which all churches would be invited to support, this year on the 3rd May at Fore St Methodist 6.30pm. Members of the CTiB Committee would also be asked to create a list of suggested charities to support this year (preferably non denominational ones) from which one would be drawn.

6. Church listings, and welcome sheet to Brixham:

Michael Atwill recommended that although Brixham News.com had an over view of all the Churches and service times on the website, but it would be great to have a hand out for visitors to welcome them, listing all churches ,their service times and events. Tony and Gill Sharp responded that last year they had produced Brixham for the Visitor with a page dedicated to all the churches of Brixham, showing basic times of services, with additional entries in the events listing pages for regular church events and special events e.g. Blessing of the Fleet / Sea Week. They hoped that all the churches would support this initiative again in Brixham for the Visitor 2009 offering the same facility.Gill and Tony would contact individual church leaders to agree entry & content for each church, with the magazine distributed prior to Easter in Tourist offices around the Bay, Holiday sites, B&BS and Hotels. Also Churches could have copies to give out. Download also available on www.brixhamnews.com for potential visitors to the town this year.

7. Distribution of Minutes:

Bridget Cussack said she would continue to help supporting the secretaries with distributing minutes and where ever possible people felt it would be better to use email and save paper, so a new address and delivery system will be developed.

The Date of the next Committee Meeting is Tuesday 17th March at 7.30pm St Mary's Church Hall. Rev.Jerry Cook then closed with everyone sharing the Blessing.
